Engineering and compliance
This procurement checklist describes calculation inputs, welding and material records, and the evidence to request from a candidate supplier. Design and approvals stay with the relevant engineers and authorities.
The bars distinguish five intake lines. Their lengths indicate worksheet order. Project status is recorded separately against the actual buyer brief.
A 40x60 foot note fills line 1 and leaves lines 3 to 5 empty. That is why a Cleary Building price per square foot is not issued from footprint alone.
Test environment: the project country, the code edition written by the buyer or left blank, and the exposure the brief claims. Method: list actions with units, then write the combinations the named code requires. Data to record: design wind speed in m/s, ground snow load in kN/m², seismic basis in g or as a design category, clear span in metres, main-frame grade in MPa. Steps: (1) convert the bay to metres and state eave height, (2) reject transferred loads from a different country, (3) mark crane, door, and collateral lines as open if blank, (4) ask the supplier to state whether member design is in scope or requires a separate study, (5) list exclusions in the same note.
Anyone with the brief can repeat steps 1 to 5 without the shop. The output is a gap list. It is not a stamped calculation and not a pass under IBC or Eurocode 3. Stamping remains with the engineer of record.
| Path | What must be named | What this desk will not infer |
|---|---|---|
| ASCE 7 / IBC route | Edition, risk category, wind speed, snow, seismic parameters the code asks for. | A permit, or that IBC applies outside the authority that adopted it. |
| Eurocode route | EN 1993 national annex, actions code, execution class if EN 1090 is in the contract. | That a CE mark or a management certificate replaces the annex. |
| Code not named | Country and the authority the buyer expects to file with. | A default wind of 45 m/s, snow of 1.5 kN/m², or seismic of 0.30 g. |
Main frames on this worksheet are plate or hot-rolled portal members in Q355 or S355 when specified. Secondary members may be cold-formed purlins and girts. Light-gauge steel house framing is a different system and is not silently substituted into a hangar. Galvanized coating mass is reported as a class such as Z275 only for the members the purchase order galvanizes. Painted plate girders follow the specified surface preparation. Welded repairs on zinc-coated steel are a known weak line: the coating is gone at the weld until the repair is done.
Fire strategy is written as three lines. Core: EPS sandwich panel, PIR sandwich panel, or rock wool sandwich panel. Joint: the seam and the steel thermal bridge. Openings: doors and penetrations. A minute rating copied from a panel datasheet onto the whole wall is rejected. Intumescent coating, if the steel fire strategy uses it, is a dry-film and section-factor subject, not a paint colour.
Volumetric modules and panelised portal frames solve different problems. A volumetric unit carries more factory work and a tighter transport envelope. A portal warehouse is usually panelised steel: frames, purlins, and sheeting, with a higher site work share and a freer clear span. Cleary Building’s primary file is the panelised industrial frame. Treating a hangar as a stack of house modules because both are “modular” mixes two structural models.
Each row identifies a record to request. Ask for the revision, author and applicability to the offered materials and fabrication facility.
A design basis should identify the site and its authority before suppliers prepare calculations. Attach the latest brief to every bid.
Where the contract specifies AWS D1.1, ask for the welding procedure and qualifications that cover the actual joint, thickness and process.
If the project invokes EN 1090, confirm execution class and the relevant documentation with the engineer and supplier before award.
Verify that any claimed AISC certificate covers the facility and scope quoted. Review the issuer’s current register and keep the verification date in the file.
Request the assembly test scope for the actual panel, joints and openings. Record penetrations separately where they differ from the tested assembly.
Check the project location, adoption and code edition with the engineer before passing the criteria to the supplier.
Treat a missing criterion as open in the comparison. Supplier certificates require verification of scope and issuer. Local approvals require project-specific review by the appointed professional and relevant authority.
Send the country, the code if you have it, the bay size, and the loads that are real. Leave the others blank. The reply is a gap list and an outline of the supplier evidence needed. It is not a permit, a fire certificate, or a square-foot price.
